What is common between IELTS, PTE and OET?

Your IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or OET scores have something in common! It’s CEFR.

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), also known as CEF.

What is CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. This is the broad framework on which your performance is measured in the IELTS test. It describes language ability on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered the language. This makes it easy for anyone involved in language teaching and testing, such as teachers, to know the performance level of a student. It also means that employers and educational institutions can easily compare our qualifications to other exams in their country.

How does CEFR WORK?

CEFR or CEF is a point-based system, minimum 80 and maximum 230 points can be scored which correspond to grades from PreA1 to C2.

For example, an IELTS score of 7 corresponds to C1 grade under CEFR, in PTE the same C1 grade would be a score between 76-84. Most English exams like IELTS, PTE, OET are mapped with reference to CEFR.

How does it affect me in India?

In India, when you clear standard 12th English with a decent score under CBSE board then you are close to level B2, which equals to IELTS band score of 6-6.5.

Another analogy, for BPO/ITES employees who have had experience in calling, can consider themselves at around the band score of 6.

This should help you with an understanding of your own level in English.

In other countries like The UK, Australia, NZ, The USA, Canada and The European Union, students independently write Levels A1 to B2 during their school curriculum in order to be eligible for university (college) applications.

CEFR helps you and the concerned party determine your level of English Language.
