As society transcends from being physical to virtual, it is assumed that newspapers and books would be available to read online without any charge. Even though the market share of online news has ballooned in the last few years, the trend in the case of books is equally inadequate.

Printed news is as vital in our society as a cup of tea is for the English, nonetheless, over the years this element has seen a dramatic change in its delivery and readability. Nowadays, most printed publications are available online for free. As such, most households have begun consuming news and events around them on digital devices such as laptops or mobile phones. Besides, it is not surprising to note that most news agencies, both big and small, have begun focussing on their online presence. Their websites, for instance, present breaking news as it occurs. It seems in the future, newspapers would switch to a completely online platform.

However, it seems printed works such as novels and reference books would remain an essential part of life. Primarily, in the case of educational institutes, especially from developing nations, it becomes overly difficult to provide each student with a digital device. Another reason would be the discomfort defined by most authors in sharing their manuscripts over the internet. They contend that as soon as a digital copy is made available, there are unscrupulous online pirates who would distribute them illegally. As expected, this makes a dent in their earnings and, in some extreme cases, breaches their privacy. It seems making books available online without any payment is not only impractical but also detrimental.

To conclude, I would partly agree with the statement and state that newspapers may be made available online for free, as it is beneficial to society. Nevertheless, online access to academic publications and books should be dealt with more scrutiny.
