What was the occasion?
This was during one of our summer holiday trips in the scorching sweating season. I was constantly clicking photos of every monument to the streets to people in every nook and corner. Who knows when will I get another chance to be there again?
Where were you?
We visited the famous pilgrimage spot – the Puri Jagannath Temple located in the Northeastern coastal part of India. Now, this is one of the most prominent Hindu spiritual destinations. They have high security there and using phones is prohibited. Not just phones, no bags or sunglasses or hats are allowed there.
Why was no mobile phone allowed there?
On that day I remember, there was a massive crowd, and for public safety, it seemed justified not to allow the use of phones. It’s a place of worship, to pray and find solace and it is rude to disturb others with phone calls and photography. To respect the deity and every devotee, I was happy to oblige. Although my urge to take a snap of the humungous pillars and marvellous carvings remained insatiable.
Explain how did you feel about it?
Without my bag and stuff I was already feeling half-naked. Being so helpless, I could feel my nomophobia kicking in. It got from bad to worse when I got lost in the crowd and the intricate layout of the place confused me further. If only there was GPS to the rescue! It was impossible for me to even make a call to my parents to know where they were. I was anxious and started to panic. I just wanted to hold my phone to boost my morale. I did not speak their language and it seemed impossible to escape the sacred place. That’s exactly when I felt bereft of communication means. After a while, I reunited with my family. Unfortunately, this was the time when I was not allowed to use my phone which was an unpleasant part of my otherwise splendid trip.
