IELTS Essay Answer –
Crime and Technology (the tricky one)
- Most of the people think that high-end technology can prevent and cut down the rate of crime. Many others feel that technology has caused crime commitments to increase.
- Do you agree or disagree with this?
NOTE TO READERS: This question was passed on by one of my students. Usually, IELTS does not ask such a complicated question. If you read the question carefully, you would observe that the statement has two parts. One part points out that the crime rate has been brought down with high-end technology. Contrastingly, the other part of the statement claims that crime has increased with technology. Finally, the question asks if you agree or disagree. I hope you are with me, till now.
As both the statements contrast each other, it becomes difficult to agree or disagree with the compound statement. However, when I researched over the internet I found this question: Most of the people think that high-end technology can prevent and cut down the rate of crime. Do you agree or disagree with this? If that’s the case, then we already have an essay for this question. Please check out our essay on crime rate and technology.
Now, that you have understood my dilemma, let’s attempt the question shared by my student.
Sample Essay, 280 words
Of late, technology has become a vital instrument in preventing crime. However, criminals seem to elude the prying eyes of surveillance and walk off scot-free. Some people have found the application of technology against society just as vehemently, if not more so, as they did with weapons.
As the use of the internet swiftly became a part of our banks and government offices, its acceptance by the masses also bolstered. High-end technological innovations in cryptography and complex algorithms have helped financial institutions to effectively secure and manage assets. Moreover, governments and especially, the military has had a great revolution with the advent of complex pieces of equipment such as Radars and Satellites, which ensures a sense of security and brings order among the public. Thus, there is not a scintilla of doubt that technology plays a vital role in policing crime.
Contrastingly, evidence of technology being used for anti-social activities has surfaced in the past few years. Tech-savvy youngsters are well aware of the loopholes in certain technical systems, they target vulnerable information and use it to either harm others or to gain benefits for themselves. For instance, a criminal can use a card reader or scanner to duplicate your ATM card and if the perpetrator gets hold of the ATM PIN then you and your financial assets are at risk. Similarly, in a recent study, it was found that terrorists use the internet to effectively communicate with each other. They use the anonymity offered by the dark web to trade illegal items and play their feral games.
To conclude, while high-end technology has helped society be a safe resort for many of us, this tool has also proved to be abysmal. I would completely concur with the compound statement above.
